Last week we held our very first cocktail comp of the year in sunny Bath.
With the theme ‘British Heritage’, we couldn’t have asked for a more quintessentially British day. Spring sunshine welcomed us into the beautiful city of Bath, and little union jack bow ties welcomed us into the (almost) refurbished Sub 13 Bar.
Six local bartenders battled it out to win a hamper of Chase goodies, including a trip to our Luxury County House Hotel, The Verzon for an overnight stay, dinner, bed and breakfast, and of course, a private Chase Distillery tour as well as having their winning drink featured on the Sub 13 cocktail menu.
We had four amazing industry judges:
Chelsie Bailey, head bartender at Red Light and Speed Rack champ. Clem Eastel from Dark Horse Bath legend in his own right, cocktail king and spirits mad man. Ed Fortune head chef at Bowood House & Hotel cocktail and wine connoisseur with a passion for great food and drink.
And our very own Chase Distillery export queen, Phoebe Green.
There was plenty of cheers and thankfully, no tears. First to the floor Adam Collier, Sub 13s own, whose use of a tasty homemade Pink Lady apple shrub had the judges’ taste buds dancing. Second up was ‘Jeeves’, from the famous Dark Horse Bar, with a bright British beetroot number, using our GB Gin. Jeeves was followed by his friend and colleague, Aaron Miller, with a GB gin and rhubarb beauty, delivered with an impressive knowledge of the wonderfully British forced rhubarb. Our forth contestant for the day was Spyros Miarhs another Sub 13 bar tender, competing for the first time, presented the judges with an English rose inspired GB Gin cocktail. Our penultimate contestant for the day was Theo Quinn, representing Red Light bar in Bristol. Theo’s take on a Morning Glory Fizz paid homage to the story of Chase and included a clever serve on a Union Jack tea towel. And the final contestant was first timer Phoebe Robinson from Vino Vino, whose use of a tangy homemade rhubarb syrup and jam had the judges’ mouths watering.
After a final cheers the judges retired to the Champagne Lounge, where they took some time to decide, listening to each other’s different opinions, stemming from their own industry and flavour expertise. Announced in 2nd place was Aaron Mander for his GB Gin and rhubarb cocktail, ‘First Light’.
And the winner of the South West Chase Distillery Cocktail Competition and all the lovely prices that go with the honourable title, is Theo Quinn with his cocktail ‘Heart of The Farm’ a beautifully balanced drink using our Williams GB Gin, a Barbadian rum syrup, paying homage to where William Chase had the eureka idea to try making potato vodka and a raspberry syrup, quoted as William’s favourite fruit. Theo’s Chase drink shall be featured on Sub 13’s new menu, so get yourselves down there for a tasty tipple.
