CHASE IN THE USA

A few weeks back I headed out to Texas and Oklahoma to meet, for the very first time, our fantastic distributers. Having previously thought that the market wouldn’t be interested in our humble spirits from Herefordshire, I was astounded with the reaction and willingness to try. Farm to Table eating and drinking has swept through the states and folk are more than ever interested to see where their produce is sourced from. Both Texas and Oklahoma are similar to Herefordshire and have a strong farming history dating back generations, so straight from the off I had a great understanding with and appreciation for barters and shop owners.

Texas is arguably the home of smoked foods and obviously our very own smoked vodka went down a storm, to a point where many bartenders refused to let me leave the bar before I tried one of their interesting smoked cocktails!  A drive along the “Barbecue Belt”, from Austin to San Antonio, is an opportunity to indulge yourself with ribs, slabs of brisket and Texas-style pinto beans, while discovering the greenery of central Texas along with some of America’s quaintest towns. As with most other things, size is a major factor, so build up an appetite first by swapping the car seat for a saddle or hiking out into the wilds. Your starting point is Austin, which is now famous as a musical city, thanks to the annual South by South West Festival, Iron Works BBQ serves supreme barbecued meats and sells seasonings and spice rubs. These can be addictive! On route, you’ll pass through Taylor, a former railroad town, established on one of the major cattle trails of the late 1800s, and Elgin, known as “the Sausage Capital of Texas”. In Driftwood and Lockhart you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to barbecue restaurants. You must visit soon!

Here is a small snapshot of what I got up to captured by my iPhone! I can’t wait to get back soon!
