Exclusive Question & Answer Session With William Chase

This week we sat down with William Chase himself to ask the questions that you’ve all been dying to ask! As with all creative entrepreneurs, William has a busy schedule, and although he is at the distillery most days it is hard to pin him down! He’s always running around speaking to people and telling them about his new ideas. Luckily, on this occasion, we managed to stick to the essentials and hopefully we’ve answered some of your burning questions. Let us know if not and we will try and fit them in our next Q&A…

How do I get a bar or shop to carry Chase?

If your discerning liquor store or bar doesn’t sell Chase or Williams, please just ask them to! Remember their name so you can ask for them next time you go in to thank them, or give them grief for not having it yet! Thanks for this, I really appreciate all the help.

Are you looking to hire?

All of our positions are currently filled but I am always on the lookout for that someone special. When we have roles open, we do a search at that time and post positions to our social media pages. Email me anytime for a chat.

Will Chase be doing any events or tastings this year?

Absolutely, we’re constantly touring the UK and worldwide with our cult Land Rovers. Head over to our Facebook page to find next events. My son James is our head ambassador and I’m sure he would love to hear from you if you run a great event. Here’s his email:

Who owns Chase Distillery?

We are 100% family owned.

Do you do Distillery Tours?

Yes we do, head on over to the tours section !

I really loved one of your spirits and now you have discontinued it. Will you be reintroducing it?

We have a very busy programme of new spirit development and there isn’t always room to recreate old favourites. If there’s enough interest, of course, we’ll consider re-releasing. Let us know on Facebook if you’re desperate to see anything again!

Are your spirits vegetarian or vegan?

Absolutely, no animal derived products are used in the production of our products.

How long have you been in business?

I’ve been farming all my life, so too long!

How many times is Chase Vodka distilled?

119 times through our copper rectification column Maxiums, the tallest in the world.

What does Single-Estate mean?

All the base crops used for fermenting are sourced from the fields surrounding the distillery.

What proof is Chase Vodka?

40% alcohol by volume (80 proof)

How did you get in the vodka & gin business?

As Tyrrells grew, I was searching for the next step. In 2004 whilst travelling in the USA, looking for packaging equipment for the chips, I stumbled on a small distillery making potato vodka and thought this would be a great new chapter to life. So I returned home, thought about it and decided it would definitely be more fun making vodka. I researched the market and found it to be full of a lot of ‘twee’ marketing stories or large corporate companies. So I thought there would be a market if we could make a quality product and sell it with the provenance and pedigree.
I sourced a traditional type of still to make the vodka base but my research told me that to get the best quality, without filtering out all of the character, we needed a bespoke rectifying column. It was hard work but eventually we found a great family firm with over 100 years of experience to supply us with one.

How are Chase Vodka and Williams Gin gluten-free?

Chase Vodka and Williams GB Gin are made from potatoes as a distilled spirit, they are completely gluten-free. Some producers add a little bit of mash back into the spirit after distillation, which would add gluten content into an otherwise gluten-free distillate (if using wheat as the base), but I don’t do that regardless. We’ve also been certified Gluten-Free. It’s an important thing for us and we actually include “Gluten-Free” on our labels and website so people can make informed choices.

Do you make a reserve vodka?

No I believe in making the very best every single day- so proud I’ve put my name on it.

What’s the difference between vodka and gin?

Well Gin is made from Vodka, so just juniper berries and botanicals! What splits us apart from the pack is refusal to buy in mass made neutral grain spirit and as a result we are one of the only true Single-Estate distilleries in the world.

How did you learn how to distill?

I am self taught and constantly learning and developing.

What is the best vodka in the world?

That is up to you. I think Chase is the smoothest and creamiest in the world.

Where do you get your potatoes?

From the very fields that surround the distillery, my son Harry heads up the farming side of the business.

Do your spirits contain artificial ingredients?

No, all the flavour in our spirits come from the ingredients: potatoes, apples, botanicals and citrus.

Do you support charities?

Yes, we do as much as we are able to by donating product. If you would like to make a request, drop me an email via

How can I help?

Just spread the word. Tell 10 of your closest friends and explain the story. You can help change the way spirits are seen for everyone!
